Can I use a light bar or auxiliary lamps on the road?

Before you start: Choose lighting by its approved purpose and fitment. Brightness, a cover or a separate switch alone does not establish that a light is approved for road use.

Check fitment and use separately
The Central Motor Vehicles Rules cover lighting equipment; the 2017 Driving Regulations govern its use. Ask which requirements apply to the lamp, mounting position and vehicle. An approval mark on one component should not be treated as approval of an entire installation.
Consider everyone on the road
Have an installer check beam aim, wiring protection, mounting and electrical capacity. Keep required lamps, reflectors and plates unobstructed. Avoid glare and use dipped beams appropriately around traffic. Extra light should help you see without taking visibility away from other drivers.
Check where work lighting belongs
For a campsite or private-site lamp, confirm where it may be fitted and used before installing it. Do not assume switching it off makes every mounting arrangement compliant. Keep the lamp documentation, installation details and approval response.
