What should I check before fitting a snorkel?

Before you start: Treat a snorkel as an intake modification with installation and approval checks. It is not a promise that your vehicle can safely cross deeper water.

Describe the actual modification
Section 52 provides the alteration framework; it does not give blanket snorkel approval. Describe the body cutting, intake changes and mounting proposed for your vehicle when asking the registering authority for guidance.
Stay within the vehicle's limits
Ask the manufacturer about stated wading limits and the proposed intake change. Have the installer document sealing, drainage and inspections. Do not infer that electrical systems, breathers or the rest of the vehicle gain new water-crossing capability because the intake sits higher.
Keep route choice conservative
Choose a bypass or turn back when access, depth, flow or the exit is uncertain. Before installation, discuss the modification and intended use with your insurer. Ask specifically about water damage rather than assuming an accessory endorsement settles every claim.
